Wingate Wilderness Therapy, established in 2008, is a premier wilderness-based therapy program for troubled adolescents as well as young adults. WinGate offers two separate and unique programs that help these clients to combat behavioral issues as well as alcohol addiction and other substance abuse issues.
While the center does not provide any detox services, it does provide dual diagnosis support for clients suffering from co-occurring disorders. Psychiatric medication management is also offered.
WinGate’s Kanab-based office is located about a three-hour drive out of Las Vegas. Wingate Wilderness Therapy is the only wilderness therapy program that has got permission for operating in the western parts of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.
One cannot say that the Wingate Therapy program is a residential treatment program in its most real sense. Clients who take part in the WinGate program live in Utah’s breathtaking expanse. Clients live in makeshift tents, and their kitchen is nothing more than a camp stove. The center believes that this simplicity allows its clients to develop clarity. Each client is responsible for his/her campsite.
Meals are one of the essential parts of this therapy program. Mealtimes are used for stressing the importance of responsibility and trust.
WinGate Wilderness Therapy does not offer an out-of-the-world dining experience to its clients. That said, they are provided hearty meals. Meals are prepared from a diet plan developed by a nutritionist, after factoring in the ever-changing settings, which can sometimes prove to be challenging for preparing meals.
The meals are prepared with fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, and staples like beans and rice, along with various protein options.
WinGate’s wilderness therapy program lasts between eight and 12 weeks. During this period, the organization’s wilderness first respondents and qualified therapists guide the adolescent (aged 13 to 17) and young adult (aged 18 to 26) groups through a route that showcases the rich diversity of the Utah landscape.
WinGate does not utilize CBT or 12 steps as its treatment protocol. Instead, WinGate uses a unique therapeutic approach that emphasizes an active daily schedule focusing on introspection, interaction with peers and the environment.
A typical day at this unique program starts with residents taking part in personal circles after they wake up. These circles allow clients to contemplate, meditate, or pray. Daily goals are established, followed by recovery meetings. Clients are served breakfast after these meetings following which they embark on the day’s hike, weather permitting.
Small groups travel about five miles every day for five days every week. Two days are reserved for recuperation as well as staff rotation. Each evening, clients need to set up a campsite and prepare dinner, and also engage in some personal time. This time enables the clients to read and finish their therapy assignments.
This is also the time when counselors conduct individual sessions. Infrequent group sessions aimed at building self-awareness are also held during the evening times.
The staff-to-client ratio at Wingate’s program is 1:3.
WinGate does recognize the importance of family while treating its clients. It offers mid-stay visits, family workshops, and phone-call-based sessions. The organization also encourages clients to write letters to their families. This not only helps the family to understand what the client might be experiencing but also helps in giving them peace of mind.
A unique feature of the WinGate Wilderness Therapy is that it allows the clients to get six half-credits as part of high school requirements, ranging from Language Arts to Outdoor Education. This service, however, comes at a cost, and clients willing to get these have to shell out an additional fee of approx. $ 300.
Besides these, WinGate also arranges for a transition ceremony when a client completes the program.
Approximately $18,000 (30 days) or approx. $600 per day and an approximately $3,000 enrollment fee (fees for the first 56 days should be paid upfront).
