Founded in 1994 by an ex-addict Kevin R. McDonald, TROSA or Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers is a comprehensive, licensed substance abuse recovery program. This nonprofit facility runs a residential two-year recovery program for substance abusers. The success rate of this program is very high.
TROSA facilities can house up to 500 residents at any point, though not at the same location. TROSA has three main campuses located in Durham. TROSA offers its residents shared dormitories for the initial 18 months of the program. Residents gradually earn their right to live in an apartment-like setting located on campus.
Residents prepare three meals every day, which is served cafeteria-style. Special requests are not entertained. Residents, however, are offered various healthy options.
TROSA offers its clients individual and group therapies as well as education based on evidence-based methods such as behavioral modification, CBT, DBT, and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Residents are also offered trauma-informed care, anger management classes, EMDR, and relapse prevention education.
Clients attend group sessions led by peers thrice weekly. TROSA also provides individual sessions, but it has to be specially requested or if the counselors deem it necessary. TROSA places a lot of emphasis on peer support, and it is a vital cog in the way the community runs.
Besides therapy, TROSA also emphasizes building a strong work ethic in its clients. During the initial 30 days of their program, every resident is treated as an intern and is required to perform various activities.
Some of the intern activities include team projects, daily recovery classes, learning about different rules and structure of the recovery program, as well as visiting various TROSA properties. Once the client enters the freshman phase, they are assigned to different vocational training departments.
Some of the assigned jobs include running the switchboard, office work, and running the transportation department. The client can also get trained as an auto mechanic or work in one of the several TROSA businesses such as moving company, thrift store, as well as a lawn care operation.
The clients work eight hours a day, six days a week in their assigned jobs. Once they complete six months, they are considered “residents.” A resident can avail certain classes outside the program ambit such as prepping for GED or parenting.
Men and women are assigned different housing facilities and do not mingle with each other for the first year of their program. They, however, do attend recovery courses and vocational training together.
Staff at TROSA is highly experienced and well qualified. Many staff members are ex-addicts and have graduated from the TROSA program. Staff members include licensed professional counselor associates and clinical addictions specialists, certified substance abuse counselors, and certified alcohol and drug counselors.
It’s not all work at TROSA. Residents have outings and activities such as dance and monthly trips to the lake. They can also visit the museum, attend plays or basketball games. Clients can also participate in graduation ceremonies of other residents which happens every three months. Attending this experience is treated as an inspiration for clients who are currently undergoing the program.
Once a resident completes 21 months, they can apply for an off-site job and save their earnings till they graduate. Once they graduate, they can make use of the transitional housing program offered by TROSA. They can stay for an additional year and receive the benefits which a client avails.
Clients can avail these services while enjoying more freedom and putting the skills they acquired to work. TROSA encourages all its graduates to continue attending the free aftercare programs that are offered on the campus.
TROSA runs a well-organized and highly structured treatment program. Clients completing the program are equipped with better skills to stay sober and return to their communities with a fresh perspective on life.
TORSA’s program acts as an excellent opportunity for all those who want to change their lives, but do not have any options. The best part of the TROSA program is that it is free. All that the client needs to do is follow the rules and work hard.
