The Institute of Living, founded in 1822, is one of the earliest mental health facilities in the US. Located in Hartford, Connecticut, the facility is one of the country’s leading not-for-profit centers that offer comprehensive patient care in the field of addiction, behavioral, and psychiatric disorders.
A part of Hartford Hospital since 1994, the center offers crisis stabilization by way of inpatient care (short-term), Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), as well as outpatient programs.
The Institute of Living is set up on campus spanning 35 acres. Residents are divided depending on the wing with one unit housing 30 higher-functioning clients and another unit with 30 clients suffering from chronic symptoms. There is also a unit that houses 24 children, adolescents, and seniors. Rooms at the facility are double-and four-person occupancy with each room having adjustable beds.
Residents are served meals from a menu, which includes hot dogs, hamburgers, pasta, and pizza. Residents are also given snacks. The facility does accommodate dietary restrictions.
A resident starts the treatment at the Institute of Living with a comprehensive assessment which comprises clinical, medical, and psychosocial components. A treatment program is designed based on the assessment results.
A resident may have to undergo a crisis stabilization program for several days to weeks, depending on the result of the assessment. Treatment programs include individual and group sessions to prepare a client for either a residential or outpatient program. Discharge planning and family sessions are introduced at this stage.
The inpatient treatment program is highly structured, with clients having counseling and therapy sessions the entire day. A typical inpatient program includes medication management with 24/7 monitoring, group therapy, couple and family therapies, vocational counseling, and case management. Residents can also interact with community providers for aftercare support and meetings.
The day treatments offered at the Institute of Living is either IOP or PHP and focuses on clients having severe mental health ailments and/or co-occurring disorders. Both the PHP and IOP help the clients in addressing their cravings and teach them coping skills. Group sessions are held three to four times a week on weekdays. Clients attend PHP group sessions from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, while the IOP sessions are from 9:00 am till noon.
Every treatment program integrates relapse prevention strategies, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), CBT, DBT, psychodynamic therapy, family systems, and interpersonal therapy.
PHP and IOP track offer clients personalized treatment and include medication management, individual case management, group therapy, family and couple therapy, drug and alcohol screenings, relapse prevention activities, free-time planning, substance abuse education, and referrals.
Outpatient services offered by the Institute of Living for mental health and substance abuse issues are very flexible. These programs seek to address issues such as anxiety, depression, grief and loss, trauma, stress management, personality and bipolar disorders, relationships, psychosis, life transitions, and unemployment.
Clients attending the outpatient program have to attend medication management, individual, group, and family therapy sessions, and couple therapy.
Since this facility is part of the Hartford group, clients have access to several psychiatrists and doctors (more than 25) who are experts in addiction. The psychiatrists and doctors are assisted by registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, psychologists, licensed social workers, and case managers. For every client, the facility employs four staff members.
Clients attending the day treatment can also provide various on-site services including inpatient psychiatric hospitalization programs. The facility also offers translation services for Hindi, German, Urdu, Romanian, Spanish, and Russian languages.
