Swift River

A wilderness treatment center, Swift River, is based in Cummington, MA. With its strong emphasis on adventure, each phase of Swift River’s program aims to address different needs of a treatment program. Swift River offers a full continuum of care for substance abuse as well as co-occurring health issues. The program provided by Swift River includes detox, residential programs, and aftercare programs for adults.

Accommodations

Situated on a 500-acre retreat at the foothills of Berkshire Mountains in the state of Massachusetts, Swift River offers an enjoyable and comfortable atmosphere for the residents while they address their problems. Swift River runs a 112-bed facility on the property that also boasts of having a lake where the resident can kayak and fish.

Residents living here share a dorm-style room with another resident of the same sex. Some additional facilities to the residents include on-site yoga classes, a high-end exercise room, and Tai-Chi.

Food

A resident living at Swift River receives three nutritious meals a day. They can also enjoy healthy snacks. Each client, during the evaluation process, gets a wellness assessment report, based on which the dietary guidelines such as restrictions on caffeine and sugar are implemented.

Treatment Program

A residential program at Swift River lasts for a month at the least. The stay, however, depends on the individual and the severity of the problem. Residents who suffer from withdrawal symptoms are offered medication-assisted detox program to ride out this phase. Swift River offers Suboxone, topiramate, or naltrexone as part of its detox program.

Residents have to attend daily group therapy sessions and one individual session in a week. Group therapy uses evidence-based approaches such as CBT, DBT, as well as Motivational Interviewing (MI). Residents also have to attend the AA/NA meeting which is held on-site.

Swift River also provides its residents with dual diagnosis support for anxiety, depression, trauma, HIV, and liver disease. Every resident has to regularly meet the psychiatrists and physicians and discuss their medical condition, as well as medications.

Staff

The treatment team at Swift River includes both Ph.D. and Masters’s level therapists, LCSWs, CADCs, as well as case managers.

Additional Facilities

Besides offering clinical care and counseling, Swift River also provides its residents with a variety of outdoor adventures. Residents get to enjoy outdoor activities such as camping, swimming, hiking, fishing, zip-lining, and mountain climbing throughout the year. Residents are also encouraged to learn survival skills such as cooking over fires that are made from scratch and constructing shelters. This activity is optional, and residents can opt-out if they are not comfortable.

Swift River also offers residents who graduate free yearlong aftercare program. These include once-weekly interactions with a counselor as well as participating in once-monthly alumni groups. Referral for temporary housing as well as for outpatient programs is also offered.
