Set up in 1987 and nestled in 450-acres of rolling hills, trees, and lakes, Sundown Ranch is an accredited residential treatment facility set up to address chemical dependency issues and co-occurring disorders in young people in the age group of 12 to 24 years.
Located in Canton, a city in northeast Texas, Sundown Ranch is like a summer camp that helps its residents to get sober in the lap of nature. The housing units that can accommodate nearly 70 residents and treatment facilities are situated in a working ranch. Residents are grouped according to their age and gender and share their room with other residents.
The residents enjoy healthy, home-cooked meals in the mess hall. They can enjoy a seasonal menu every four weeks, while salad bars are readily available during lunch and dinner every day. Dietary preferences, nutritional needs, and allergies are taken care of during meal preparation, which is overseen by a dietitian, food service manager, and staff.
Sundown Ranch offers on-site detoxification services for the needy residents before they start their program. Treatment is provided under the supervision of a psychiatrist and a medical director with the help of a 24/7 staff. Residents have to undergo a physical exam to monitor physical progress along with progress in spiritual and emotional aspects during their stay.
The core of the center’s treatment approach is the 12-steps approach in combination with CBT, such as extensive counseling and daily group therapy session. Sundown Ranch develops a Master Treatment Plan for each of its residents where the goals, progress, strengths, and weaknesses of each resident is recorded and revised until the completion of the treatment program.
Sundown Ranch ensures that the clinician, the resident’s family, and resident work together to develop a system which would help the resident become sober and stay sober.
As part of the treatment program, residents undertake supervised physical activities as well as a bouquet of recreational opportunities like camping, fishing, arts & crafts, basketball, and volleyball.
Residents can also participate in equine therapy (wherever implemented) and ROPES course, called The Therapeutic Outdoor Experimental Challenge Program. The outdoor schedule is worked into the program to help the resident improve their problem-solving skills and self-confidence.
Residents can also take part in the wilderness trail based on the 12-steps approach, where the resident can either have solo meditation or take part in group therapy led by counselors.
The family is given prime importance at Sundown Ranch, and family members are allowed to speak freely, ask questions, raise concerns as well as attend Intensive Family Program during weekends where families join their loved ones in the treatment to focus of enhancing communication, repair old wounds and work on ways move forward in life.
A unique feature of this program is the accredited academic program. A charter school with accreditation from The Texas Education Agency operates on-site to ensure that the residents continue education (junior high, high school) while undergoing treatment.
Aftercare is also given due importance at Sundown Ranch, and the resident’s family and sponsor get involved while preparing an effective aftercare treatment plan. Once the resident is released, they can call the staff at any time for relapse prevention.
Besides a medical director and psychiatrists, the rest of the staff at Sundown Ranch include nursing staff, MFTs, social workers, and addiction medicine specialists.
A majority of the staff members are part of the recovery program, which helps in establishing a level of relatability for the clients. Each client has a dedicated team that assists in the attainment of specific sobriety goals.
