St. Simons By-The-Sea was established in 1982 in St. Simons, GA. The facility is an addiction and psychiatric hospital that offers inpatient care for teens and adults. Saint Simons’ treatment options include inpatient (medical and mental) program, a residential program (short-term), detox (medically managed) and treatment for co-occurring disorders.
Saint Simons is located on an idyllic island off the Georgian coast, less than 100 miles from both Jacksonville, Fl. and Savannah, Ga. This 101-bed facility is a one-story hospital built in Spanish style and has three attached wings. The campus has landscaped grounds and is surrounded by tropical greenery. Clients can walk on the manicured paths, play tennis, or just sit on the courtyard.
Fitted with hardwood floors and several windows, the double occupancy rooms are painted with the colors that bring the ocean inside. Each room comes with twin beds and an ensuite bathroom. The housing unit has a common media/kitchen area that is painted in sea green colors and has several chairs. The common area has juice and snack machines and big-screen TVs.
The residents are served meals prepared by kitchen staff. The meals are made from a menu designed with a dietitian’s inputs. There is no restriction on sugar and caffeine (depends on the client). The staff does allow for dietary recommendations.
As mentioned, Saint Simons is a facility that offers its clients short-term acute care. The facility provides a truncated 14-day program that, while offering dual diagnosis support, boasts of the same success rate as a traditional program.
Before starting the treatment program, the clients undergo an assessment to determine whether they need detox services or can start the residential program directly. At the same time, they are assigned a primary therapist. A psychiatrist assesses them for co-occurring issues and to determine whether they need medication management.
Those who require detox are treated with Suboxone. The primary therapeutic modality for the inpatient program is CBT. Like any traditional program, clients attend a daily group session with thrice-weekly individual sessions.
A day at Saint Simons’ starts with wake-up at 6:00 am followed by breakfast. Goals group sessions and another group session follow. Lunch is served at 11:45 am which is followed by recreational therapy. At 2:00 pm, residents have a meeting with a staff therapist and choose either a group session or a down time. Dinner is served at 5:00 pm. Following dinner, residents attend an AA meeting on-site and a daily process group. Lights are switched off at 11:00 pm.
The treatment team at Saint Simons comprises medical staff as well as the therapeutic team. Each member has years of experience in addiction treatment, relapse prevention, recovery, and mental health. The ratio of staff-to-client is 1:5.
Besides the inpatient program, St. Simons’ offers its residents several recreational options such as yoga, music and art therapies, and karaoke. While the facility does not provide any on-site gym, residents can sweat it out on the tennis courts.
