Franciscan Friars of the Atonement established the St. Christopher’s Inn in 1909. Initially set up as a treatment center and temporary shelter for the homeless, The Friars established St. Christopher’s Inn as a ministry where men of every culture and creed could seek refuge and get treated for alcohol and substance abuse addiction.
Over time, St. Christopher’s Inn has morphed into a full-service treatment center that offers free inpatient and outpatient programs to residents affectionately called “Brothers Christopher.”
St. Christopher’s Inn houses both the administrative/outpatient section and a 200-bed shelter. Like the Friars, men live in dorm-style accommodations, with lockers for storing their belongings and clothes.
Those who need clothes can get it from a clothing room assembled by the staff and Friars. The clothing room boasts of clothes of all styles and sizes and for any weather conditions. Every man is provided with whatever he requires during his stay at the inn. Laundry facilities are also provided on-site.
During their down time, Brothers Christopher can play puzzles, video games, ping pong, or sweat it out on the exercise bicycles. Those who wish to read can do so in the library on the facility.
Brothers Christopher do not pay anything for the shelter, but they perform any assigned activities such as helping in preparing or serving meals, helping in admissions and maintaining the grounds and buildings.
Brothers Christopher are served three meals a day, family-style, in Paul Manzo Memorial Dining Room. In addition, snacks and coffee are provided in the evening.
Saint Christopher’s Inn provides licensed outpatient treatment and ambulatory medically-managed detox program to Brothers Christopher at the shelter. Doctors and nurses evaluate the men who need medical attention in Article 28 Clinic. Based on the evaluation, men are provided with appropriate treatment or medication.
The outpatient treatment/day rehab offered by St. Christopher’s Inn includes individual and group therapy sessions, Motivational Interviewing, meditation groups, as well as 12-step onsite meetings. Typically, one half of the day is spent on attending groups and therapy sessions while the other half is spent on doing the assigned chores.
The outpatient group meets every day in a week, except Sunday. While a majority of the attendees are men staying in the shelter, the sessions also see the attendance of other men attending on a strictly outpatient basis.
The Day Rehabilitation Program offered by the facility has been approved by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services. The New York State Department of Health has approved the medical clinic, while the New York State Department of Social Services has approved the shelter.
The treatment team at St. Christopher’s Inn includes a house manager, credentialed counselor (full-time), and part-time counselors (working on weekends). The clinical staff comprises a doctor and nursing staff.
The facility also offers holistic treatment such as pastoral counseling and yoga to its residents and other men who attend outpatient programs. St. Christopher’s Inn also provides programs such as smoking cessation program, a family program, as well as education and vocational services. They also offer transitional living accommodation in Westchester County.
