Established in 1989 by Charles West, Skyland Trail is a non-profit organization that specializes in the treatment of clients aged 18 and above. Primarily focusing on substance use and co-occurring mental ailments, this Joint Commission-accredited hospital utilizes a treatment approach that includes evidence-based care, psychiatric care, psychoeducation, and holistic therapies.
Skyland Trails offers its patients residential, outpatient as well as transitional living programs. Residential care is provided at the South campus and is for both adolescent and adult patients.
Skyland Trail offers a mixed-gender residential accommodation at its South campus. The atmosphere at this 24-bed facility is very friendly without compromising the privacy of a patient. Each client gets a private room that has an en suite bathroom and basic furnishing.
The residential facility offers its clients plenty of amenities which include a dining room, a spacious floor plan, an exercise room, upscale common areas equipped with beautiful furnishings and flat-screen TVs, and a beautiful garden surrounding the building.
The main campus where most of the sessions are held has multiple rooms for group therapies, a recreation center designed to look like an airline hanger, common areas, and a greenhouse.
Clients can use laptops, cell phones, and even the internet after they spend a few days in the residential program. Clients desirous of having a smoke can do so in the designated smoking areas.
Residents enjoy healthy yet delicious meals prepared on-site. The Skyland chef makes the meals with inputs from a nutritionist who has designed a nutrient-rich menu. The culinary team accommodates special requests like dietary restrictions or food allergies.
A comprehensive health assessment of the client is conducted during the intake. This evaluation, while helping the clients in determining their recovery goals, also allows staff to create an effective treatment plan. Based on the client’s needs, the team at Skyland prepares an individualized treatment program.
Even though stay at this residential campus varies according to the needs of the clients, a minimum period of eight weeks is considered an average length of stay. On average, a client stays in residential care for two months and spends another two months in an outpatient program.
When it comes to a treatment program, Skyland offers an integrated approach that includes a combination of medication management, daily group therapy sessions, weekly individual therapy sessions, family therapy, education and wellness activities.
The center utilizes CBT, DBT, and cognitive remediation therapy for improving the psychosocial functioning and memory of the patient. They also use 12-Step recovery as part of its treatment protocol. Clients who require dual diagnosis support are also provided with medication management.
Skyland offers its client specialized group sessions where the residents discuss gender-specific issues and topics focusing on personal loss, healthy relationships, and life and social skills. The facility also offers its clients psychoeducational classes, where they can learn about their ailment and develop strategies to prevent relapse. Additionally, vocational services are also provided for individuals who wish to return to the workforce.
While the adult patients aged 18 and above stay for a period of eight to 12 weeks in a residential program, adolescents aged between 14 and 17 remain at the residential campus for six weeks. Once the residential care is completed, they are transitioned to a daycare program.
Residents completing their stay are transitioned to a partial hospitalization program. They stay in the day level of care for six to eight weeks (adults six to eight weeks and adolescents for six weeks). Once the stay period is complete, the residents are stepped down to IOP.
Skyland Trails also provides outpatient services to its graduates and patients suffering from specific ailments.
The treatment team at Skyland Trail comprises of psychiatrists, psychologists, Masters-level counselors, specialized therapists, nutritionists, pastoral counselors, case managers, experts in vocational and life skills, and interns.
Besides the above-mentioned programs, Skyland also offers holistic therapies like music therapy, art therapy, pastoral counseling, horticulture, and recreational activities. The facility also provides a LEAP program where the residents can undertake evening activities as well as have outings to restaurants, museums, and sporting events.
Visitors can see their loved ones in the common areas. They are not allowed to enter the resident’s rooms. Visiting hours on weekdays are on Mondays and Wednesdays. The facility also offers visiting hours on the weekends.
