Situated near Asheville, North Carolina, and nestled in the lap of the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains is the Red Oak Recovery, a center that offers gender-specific treatment tracks for adults aged 18-30. These adults suffer from substance abuse as well as co-occurring mental health disorders.
Red Oak provides holistic, gender-specific treatment modalities, with adventure therapy being the main focal point.
The housing units for all the residents are located on the beautiful Red Oak Recovery campus. The rooms are very spacious and shared between two to three residents. The furnishings are very minimal. Residents are not allowed to use electronic devices during their stay at the center.
One of the essential components of the Red Oak Recovery Process is nutritional therapy. The center emphasizes on building a healthy relationship between the client and food as well as its preparation. Residents are served nutrient-dense, yet delicious food.
The residents, besides undergoing the treatment process, also tend the farm. They learn how to cultivate various vegetables and fruits during their time here. They also spend time discussing the origins of various foods they consume as well as different methods of preparing the food.
Besides being taught how to cook, the residents also learn how to rear egg-laying chickens.
While 65 days is the average length of stay for men’s program, and women 90, residents can extend their stay for six months or longer. Both the treatment tracks have the same treatment modalities, with the programs including therapies that address gender-specific developmental as well as transitional difficulties.
The men’s program also focuses on steps to seek help and anger management, while the women’s programs focus on healthy relationships and body image. The residents can also get medically monitored detox and medication management.
Residents attend a very structured treatment program. The days are spent attending group therapies, individual sessions, 12-step recovery meetings, psychoeducation classes, and adventure therapy. These and other therapies are aimed at addressing problems related to substance abuse as well as co-occurring mental health, grief, trauma, and any other reasons for addictive behavior.
The primary treatment modalities are DBT and CBT. Gestalt, Motivational Interviewing, EMDR, canine therapy, as well as REBT (Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy) are introduced into the treatment programs upon the therapist’s recommendation.
Group sessions focus on relapse prevention skills, improving communication and social skills, instilling hope, and setting goals and boundaries.
The treatment team at Red Oak Recovery comprises Master’s-level therapists, licensed support staff, as well as LADC.
The thing that differentiates Red Oak Recovery for other treatment centers is the emphasis on adventure therapy. Besides a ROPES course, the campus has a zip line as well as regular fishing, hiking, and camping trips. Red Oak Recovery also offers acupuncture, yoga, and art therapy once a week.
Approximately $25,000 (30 days).
