Powell Recovery Center operates seven houses (gender-specific) spread across Baltimore. Each house accommodates up to 15 clients. All residential units of the Powell Recovery Center are close to public transportation and shopping places.
The housing units have at least three to four bedrooms and two bathrooms. Dorm-style rooms are shared between residents who sleep on bunk beds. Each residential unit has a dining room and a kitchen. These communal areas act as a meeting point for the residents.
Residents are expected to plan and prepare their meals. Many residents are eligible for food stamps. These residents pool their resources and prepare hearty family-style meals.
Rules and Regulations
Powell Recovery Center offers its residents medication-assisted detoxification, using Librium and Suboxone, for opiate and drug withdrawals. All clients undergo an evaluation process by a physician as well as a psychologist. Clients who need to stay in a safe and secure environment are transferred to their assigned houses. Other clients undergo their treatment process on an outpatient basis.
Clients who are assigned to sober living facilities have to offer a six-month commitment and should be physically fit to climb the stairs and do basic household chores. New residents have a blackout period for 60 days.
During the blackout period, the residents attend NA/AA meetings and visit stores under escort. They also have to undergo random alcohol screening and drug tests. The center has a zero-tolerance policy for those residents who test positive.
As part of its outpatient programs, Powell Recovery Center offers a basic outpatient program, Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP). While sober living clients have to attend these programs, the general public is also welcome to participate in these.
Under these programs, residents have to undergo an assessment, and based upon their results, customized treatment plans are prepared. Unemployed clients are placed in PHP. Clients with prior commitments like school or work are placed in the IOP track.
Weekly IOP treatment track comprises thrice-weekly group sessions, each lasting around three hours in the evenings. Individual sessions are held as and when required. PHP track is time-intensive, and clients meet five days each week, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. These groups are gender-specific and comprise around 20 clients every session.
The groups use an evidence-based treatment approach like CBT to address topics like sexual issues, anger management, relapse prevention, and co-occurring disorders.
The basic outpatient treatment is a step-down program from IOP. This track is only available for those clients who do not stay in the Powell Recovery Homes. This track is not time-intensive, and clients attend once month individual sessions and once-weekly group sessions.
Powell Recovery Center also provides dual diagnosis support. The treatment track involves a combination of individual and group therapies, medication management, and psychiatric evaluation.
The treatment team at Powell Recovery Center includes doctors, psychiatrists, Master’s level therapists, and CADCs.
Besides the programs mentioned above, Powell Recovery Center also offers special programs that deal with criminal justice clients.
