- Profile
Founded in 1967 by Bob Hoffman, Hoffman Institute is not a rehab in its truest sense. Located in St. Helena, a city in Napa Valley, CA, this nonprofit facility offers a residential program that specializes in spiritual growth and personal development or adult clients who are coping with several challenges in their lives.
Since this is not a treatment facility, Hoffman does not provide any traditional treatment modalities such as medication management or detox, among others. This facility offers its clients a spiritual approach which is based on Negative Love Syndrome. Residents coming here can pinpoint and alter their negative lifestyle.
Offered for one week, this program is focused on individuals who are very busy with their work schedules.
Accommodations
Situated on a lovely 45-acre campus in CA’s wine country, Hoffman Institute offers its residents plenty of space for winding down. The facility has numerous amenities for its residents, such as a stone meditation circle and a natural sulfur pool. The facility can hold up to 40 residents. Each resident stays in cottages and semi-private rooms that are furnished with sofas, beautiful beds, and bathrooms.
Food
Residents at this institute can enjoy nutritious yet delicious meals that are prepared by a culinary team who work out from the facility. Special requests, such as dietary preferences and restrictions, as well as allergies, are accommodated.
Treatment Program
Hoffman Institute offers a very intensive residential program lasting one week. The program starts on Saturday morning and continues until Friday afternoon. Even though the facility does not have an intake process, each resident is asked to fill a comprehensive questionnaire following which a personalized treatment plan is prepared.
Since Hoffman Institute is a treatment facility, clients desirous of attending a program here have to be sober and maintain it for 90 days before joining the program. While a typical program lasts for a week, clients are encouraged to extend their stay for one or two more days to help them decompress.
Hoffman Institute feels that a person’s negative patterns and habits are attributed to Negative Love Syndrome, a syndrome where individuals learn poor behavior while they are children to secure the love of their parents. They continue to act this out even after they outgrow their childhood.
The facility offers its clients various experiential practices that can guide them properly. Clients at this facility engage in a group as well as individual work along with spiritual coursework, life coaching, dance therapy, and neuro-linguistic programming.
Staff
The team at Hoffman Institute comprises of specialists from the field of philosophy, art, psychology, sociology, and management. These teachers are either a Ph.D. or Master’s level. Medication management is not offered at this institute.
In Addition
Besides the above, those residents who have completed the program are offered programs that aid in their personal growth.

A very good place to seek help. Set in a beautiful campus, Hoffman Institute does change your life. The staff is friendly and very caring. The groups are exciting, and experiential practices were out of this world. I liked the dance therapy. Thanks to the program, I came to know that I was a good dancer. Looking forward to honing my dancing skills.
This place is nothing but a joke. Some of the so-called “specialists” have no clue as to what they are supposed to do. I had completed my program, but they forcibly kept me for three more days stating that I needed to decompress. It did not help me at all. Not sure if I will be recommending this facility to friends and family.
I came to know various things about me while I was taking treatment here. I never thought I could dance well nor that I was closer to God than I wanted to believe. Staying here changed my life. I will recommend this beautiful place to everybody.
