Established in 1965, Hina Mauka started its operations as a 12-step based movement functioning out of a Hawaiian hospital.
The treatment center was started in 1984, and as on date, Hina Mauka operates three facilities that offer outpatient, adolescent, and inpatient services. Hina Mauka runs its inpatient or residential program from Kaneohe, an Oahu community well known for the tropical climate.
The adult residential program at Hina Mauka has 48 beds. It provides shared gender-specific rooms with each room having dressers, cabinet with sink as well as two twin beds. Two rooms share one bathroom.
Meals offered at the facility include a cold entrée and two hot meals daily, served in cafeteria-style. The menu on offer includes seafood, Mediterranean, Pan Pacific, Tex-Mex, and Italian cuisine.
Salad bars are stocked with fresh veggies and leafy greens for lunch as well as dinner. Nutrition snacks and coffee is available round the clock.
When it comes to treatment, detox services aren’t offered by Hina Mauka, but referrals to the outside center can be done on an as-needed basis.
Once a person is inducted into the residential program at Hina Mauka, they have to undergo a urine tox screening and a complete psychiatric evaluation. Medical monitoring and Medication-Assisted Treatment including Suboxone, is also available. There is no fixed length of stay at the Hina Mauka, but a typical stay would last 45 days.
Inpatient programs at Hina Mauka comprise of three tracks – substance abuse, co-occurring disorders, and criminal justice. Once a track is assigned, treatment plans are adapted to suit each person.
Hina Mauka’s evidence-based approach uses CBT as the primary modality. Even though 12-step meetings are conducted at the facility, residents have the option of attending church services.
Weekly treatment at Hina Mauka includes group and individual therapies, and educational sessions, with a minimum face-to-face treatment of 24 hours a week. It also includes individual counseling for at least one hour a week.
Anger management, relapse prevention, and Motivational Interviewing are some of the topics that are handled during group therapy sessions. Hina Mauka also offers trauma groups as well as gender-specific groups weekly, focusing on dual diagnosis support.
As part of its day treatment services, Hina Mauka offers an Intensive Outpatient Program. Conducted from Monday through Friday for four hours daily, it provides a comprehensive treatment program similar to the residential program, with the only difference being clients allowed to return home after the program.
Besides the above-mentioned, Hina Mauka offers outpatient treatment, from one hour to 15 hours a week, based on the individual’s needs. Group sessions run for three hours, with a maximum of five group sessions being conducted in a week.
The outpatient program offered by Hina Mauka includes crisis intervention, initial as well as updated treatment planning, substance abuse education along with the group and individual counseling.
Recreational therapy, substance abuse testing and family programs are some of the other options offered by Hina Mauka through its outpatient program.
When it comes to staff, Hina Mauka employs a Master’s level psychologist, certified substance abuse program administrator, CSAC’s, and a psychiatrist/ medical director.
All the three facilities of Hina Mauka also employ interns, volunteers, part-time counselors, and teaching assistants. It additionally offers contracts for various on-site services. The client-staff ratio is 1:2.
Taking advantage of the spectacular location, Hina Mauka provides various recreational activities, including trips to nearby nature spots, beach outings, Tai Chi, yoga, and Zumba. The center also offers its clients art and music therapies.
Hina Mauka also provides a voluntary peer mentoring program to aid in the transition from the treatment to society. Volunteers meet with clients (at any level of treatment) to infuse hope and encourage self-confidence. They conduct meetings outside treatment weekly once for nearly six months.
Hina Mauka offers aftercare services for 12 weeks once a client completes any program, with group sessions taking place once weekly for approximately 90 minutes. Teen CARE program, provided by Hina Mauka, aims at providing school and community-based substance abuse services for teenagers.
