Established in 2003 by Bobbi Jo Reed, Healing House, Inc., is located in Kansas City, Missouri. Healing House is a non-profit, faith-based organization that offers sober living facilities for adults in early recovery. The center also provides housing facilities for families with kids. Healing House’s mission is to provide a safe and structured environment for people in the early recovery program.
Healing House accommodates 25 children and 180 adults in nine buildings spread across northeast Kansas City. The apartments provided by Healing House include Pink House (the organization’s first housing unit), Purple House, and Sunshine House (all for women). Men are housed in Agape I and III, and Cornerstone. Women who are sober for greater than six months are housed in Ruth House. Families with children are housed in Benton and Spruce apartments.
While accommodations vary, but every housing unit is fully furnished. Some of the houses do allow pets, but prior approval is needed. Amenities offered by Healing House at its facilities include laundry rooms, cable TV, and daycare facilities at Benton and Spruce apartments.
Even though Healing House does offer food, residents have to cook their meals in fully equipped kitchens. Clients take turns every six weeks to eight weeks to prepare meals for the rest of the household.
Rules and Regulations
To ensure that a client is a proper fit, they have to undergo an assessment. All adults desirous of staying in the Healing House apartments have to complete detox. Upon arrival, a client has to pass an alcohol and drug screen. The organization does not allow the presence of any narcotics on the premises.
While the average length of stay is three months, most of the clients stay anywhere from six to nine months. Healing House conducts random alcohol and drug screening on its clients.
Other requirements at Healing House includes obtaining employment for at least 20 weekly hours, getting a sponsor and working with them, reading the Big Book (first 164 pages), as well as attending night house meetings on Sundays.
Clients also have to participate in faith-based gender-specific recovery meetings on Tuesdays at 6:00 pm. Residents must also participate in a fellowship program at their residence.
Healing House has zero-tolerance for drugs and alcohol, and this is implemented strictly. Clients who break this rule face eviction. A client also has to get a job within three weeks of their arrival. If they are unable to do so, they have to put in at least 15 hours of community (in-house) service.
Clients also have to attend two weekly Celebrate Recovery or 12-step meetings, and a spiritual activity which either involves attending Church or taking part in Bible study.
Other services offered by Healing House includes individual counseling, case management, vocational support, skill-building, financial counseling, and GED assistance. Even though the cost of the stay during the first 90 days is $0, clients, however, have to pay a $100 refundable deposit. After three months, they have to pay approximately $550 for the next month. The organization accepts furniture, food, and clothing as donations.
Approximately $0-$550 (30 days, does not include a $100 deposit)
