Established in 1978 by Dr. Samuel Klagsbrun, Four Winds Hospital offers treatment to children, adolescents, and adults. The hospital has two facilities, both located in the state of New York. The Saratoga Springs campus provides treatment for mental health (inpatient and outpatient). Its Katonah campus focuses on inpatient care.
The treatment philosophy of Four Winds is providing psychiatric care to patients in a comfortable and dignified setting. The hospital is focused on being the hospital where a clinician will not hesitate to refer their patients and even their loved ones.
Four Winds offers 175 beds at its Katonah facility and 88 beds at the Saratoga Springs facility. Both Katonah and Saratoga campuses have traditional buildings which are designed to make its residents feel comfortable. The residents have ample options for recreation at both campuses and can utilize the vast grounds for a walk.
Both Katonah and Saratoga facilities offer their residents private and semi-private rooms. The residents can relax and watch TV in the common areas at both the facilities.
Residents are offered meals either in facilities common areas or in their rooms.
Clients at both facilities need to undergo a primary psychiatric diagnosis. If required, Four Winds Hospital offers minimal treatment required for secondary substance abuse diagnosis. Most clients who require continued treatment for substance abuse get a referral to an outpatient program focusing on chemical dependency once the psychiatric treatment is completed.
Four Winds offer inpatient treatment for children, adolescents, and adult patients. While adult patients typically stay for a week to 10 days, the stay is for 14 days when it comes to children and adolescents. During their treatment, clients undergo daily individual as well as group therapies.
The focus of therapy is on CBT, DBT as well as psychoeducation classes which will help residents in developing coping skills and help in regulating their emotions. Sessions with psychiatrists are also arranged for monitoring of psychiatric medication.
Outpatient care by Four Winds is offered at its Saratoga Springs location. Focusing on children and adults, the center provides both an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) as well as a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP).
IOP clients attend group therapy that lasts from 12 to 4:00 pm, while PHP clients have to attend their group therapy sessions from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm three or four times a week. The outpatient treatment on an average lasts for three to four weeks.
Clients at Four Winds are treated by a team that includes psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, RNs, Masters-level therapists, and case managers. Children and adolescents undergo academic tutoring during their stay at Teaching and Learning Centers present at both locations.
To provide a more holistic treatment, Four Winds allows families to come and visit their loved ones. Four Winds also offers spiritual counseling through Pastoral Care Centers present on the campus.
