A North Carolina licensed organization, FIRST at Blue Ridge, Inc., opened its doors for service in 1991. A residential therapeutic community, FIRST treats individuals having problems with chronic substance abuse.
FIRST at Blue Ridge, Inc. provides residential treatment programs (long-term and short-term) for adults. FIRST also offers an exclusive treatment track for expecting mothers and veterans.
Located in Ridgecrest, NC, lying east of Asheville, FIRST runs its operations from a campus that has a five-story building that can accommodate 85 men and 65 women. The building also houses 20 Veterans and 25 clients in the transitional housing program. Residents stay in gender-specific wings, and four residents share the sleeping area.
Residents are served three meals, American-style, in the facility’s main cafeteria. A salad bar is available during lunch and dinner. Residents can enjoy a freshly brewed coffee in the morning. Other caffeine options, such as sweet tea, can be enjoyed throughout the day. Residents can have a limitless amount of coffee during in-house meetings.
Besides addressing the underlying issue of chronic substance abuse through its voluntary treatment programs, FIRST at Blue Ridge seeks to instill in its clients “real world” responsibilities.
Programs on offer include vocational training programs, addiction groups, life skills, and 12-step. Evidence-based therapies like Motivational Interviewing (MI) and CBT are used for helping the residents develop self-respect.
For those clients who are court-ordered but cannot undergo a long duration program, FIRST offer a short-term program. This program provides its participants with clinical assessments, seminars, and educational groups, as well as transportation to attend the 12-step meetings and other support groups. Lasting for 30 days, this program requires its participants to take part in all the programs in Phase One.
Once this initial treatment phase is completed, the residents can enroll in a long-term program, lasting for ten months. This program requires the participants to learn new work skills at a program-contracted job. Once they complete the required months, the residents can apply for “reentry,” which will allow them to work in the community.
Successful graduates can transition towards transitional housing where they can stay for a year and solidify the benefits and skills acquired during the program.
Another program offered by FIRST is a “Women and Children FIRST.” This program aims at creating a communal and supportive environment for non-pregnant, pregnant, and women with children who have faced issues with domestic violence and incarceration. This program offers several intensive residential options ranging from seven days to two weeks and from 30 to 90 days.
Finally, for veterans, there is a Vets FIRST. The VA department funds this program. This program lasts for 24 months and provides veterans substance abuse treatment, work placement, and education advancement. Once the vets are established in their work, they transition to the transitional housing facility – veteran cottage – for an additional fee.
A majority of the staff at FIRST at Blue Ridge are either program graduates or former interns at local colleges and universities and colleges. The staff stays on-site 24/7.
It depends on the program.
