Established in 1980, the Drake Institute of Behavioral Medicine is located in Irvine, California. The center offers drug-free treatment programs for clients dealing with ADHD, ADD, and autism. The evaluation, as well as the treatment programs, is provided to clients under the supervision of Dr. David Velkoff.
Operating from convenient locations in Irvine as well as San Fernando Valley, Northridge, a Los Angeles suburb, the center offers neurofeedback and brain mapping to treat several behavioral health issues such as anxiety, depression, and chemical dependency.
Even though a significant part of the clientele at the Drake Institute of Behavioral Medicine is adolescents, the institute does provide treatment for some adult clients. The Drake Institute offers various treatment programs, most of which are conducted anywhere from three days to six days a week. This, however, depends on the client’s requirements.
The Drake Institute also offers an accelerated program, designed initially for out-of-town clients, to younger clients. This involves undergoing a treatment program during the client’s summer break. This treatment track ideally lasts eight weeks for clients with autism and about six weeks for clients having ADHD.
Before starting the treatment program, clients have to undergo a brain mapping session. This involves placing 19 sensors at different parts of the client’s head. This helps in recording the brain activity, which allows the treatment team to see if there are any underperforming sections in the client’s brain.
Based on the results of brain mapping, the treatment team prepares customized treatment plans which determine the number of neurofeedback sessions required before the clients can start seeing changes to their mood, focus, and stress levels.
On average, a client has to attend about 32 to nearly 40 sessions, as part of the treatment program. Each session lasts for an hour. During the initial phase, the clients have to attend four sessions a week, which gradually decreases to one or two sessions a week. All treatment programs offered by the Drake Institute are drug-free and painless.
The unique feature of the treatments provided by the institute is that those who come to the program on medications can completely stop it three to four months after the treatment.
Connection with the loved ones, as well as the school, is an integral part of treatment programs offered at Drake. This helps the clients to have cohesive experience. Besides this, the company also offers classes on conflict reduction and stress, behavior modification therapy, group sessions, psychoeducation, and life skills.
Besides Dr. Velkoff, the treatment team at the Drake Institute comprises neuropsychologists, Master’ s-level therapists, and certified neurophysical therapists (NPTs).
The center also provides an aftercare plan which consists of attending follow-up sessions for a year.
