Founded in 1981 by Mac Gober, Canaan Land Ministries is a non-profit, interdenominational treatment center that provides a Christianity-based residential treatment program for men aged 18 and above.
Located in Autaugaville, Alabama, Canaan Land Ministries offers a year-long treatment program. Through individual counseling, work duties, and Bible study, Canaan Land provides its clients “direction with affection.”
Canaan Land also runs an affiliated program in Mapleton, Australia.
Situated on 80 acres, Canaan Land has a chapel and a residential building on its campus. The residential units can house nearly 18 male clients at a time.
When new residents arrive at the campus, they share a room with a “senior student.” These “senior students” act as mentors to the new students. Once the new residents complete a month in the treatment program, they are allotted private rooms.
While Canaan Land does not allow any type of electronic items on the campus, residents can watch TV, which is set up in common areas. This, however, is permitted only on the weekends. Residents are assigned daily chores, and they also have to take part in food preparation assignments, which allows them to gain experience in planning and cooking meals while undergoing treatment. Residents also have to take part in the laundry duties.
For recreation, residents can use the gym as well as play video games.
To gain admission into this center, clients are required to submit an application which is followed by a personal interview. Clients having mental health issues are not considered as Canaan Land Ministries does not offer any treatment support for dual diagnosis. There are, however, exceptions, which is determined on a case-to-case basis.
Once they are admitted into the program, residents undergo three classes on Bible study every day. These classes discuss ways to live in a recovery program while following Christian principles. The residents also have to attend work duties on the campus for nearly five hours every day. The 12-step approach is not a part of the treatment protocol at Canaan Land.
All residents have to attend the twice-weekly chapel services held at the chapel present on the campus. As they progress in their work assignments and Bible studies, residents can get GED counseling as well as help in pursuing additional education and work goals.
The treatment team at Canaan Land Ministries comprises four on-site counselors. These counselors have experience in recovery coaching and religious counseling. They also provide individual counseling as and when required. They are ably assisted by alumni who work on campus and help in supervision and providing peer support.
After completing 30 days in the program, family members of the residents can come and visit them before and after the Sunday church services. Those who complete three months are provided passes for off-site family visits.
As part of the treatment program, Canaan Land allows students to hear inspirational tapes or watch motivational videos. They also get ample time to go fishing, write letters, or go canoeing. They can also play basketball and volleyball. Special outings and field trips are also organized.
No charge. The center, however, does charge a $25 application fee.
